One of the country’s best stud farms has sealed a millionaire deal with the Jordanian government involving the purchase of 300 pure-bred Lusitano horses – at least 58 of which will go into the country’s police force.
The José Fontes’ breeding stables at Quinta de Arribas, Abrantes, has already despatched 41 mares and 17 stallions via military plane, along with ‘gifts’ of a foal and three-year-old filly to Jordan’s King Abdullah and Queen Rania.
The rest of the four-legged purchases will follow at a later date – still to be finalised, according to Correio da Manhã.
“I took advantage of this unexpected possibility when it came up,” José Fontes told CM – refusing to confirm or deny the purported million-euro price tag.
The ‘police’ horses were all trained by the 4th GNR squadron at Ajuda, Lisbon, for a month before their shipment.
One of the trainers said: “The Lusitano is an all-rounder. It is an ideal horse for police forces.”
