Portuguese soldiers in Afghanistan “will be home by end May”

Portuguese soldiers present in Afghanistan will all be home by the end of May. The date has been announced in a joint statement by the ministries of defence and foreign affairs following the NATO decision to put an end to the international mission that has been running in Afghanistan for almost 20 years. Portugal has participated in international efforts in the country since 2002. Nonetheless, the military intends to continue to support the Afghan army in the interests of ‘combating terrorism’ until at least 2024, says the statement.
