Portuguese Open gets underway at Penina

THE 50th edition of the Algarve Open de Portugal Caixa Geral de Depósitos is now underway at Le Meridien Penina Golf Resort in Portimão, continuing until Sunday, April 2.

This year’s field for the PGA European Tour event includes many well-known names, such as last year’s winner Paul Broadhurst, Ian Woosnam, Robert Jan-Derkson, Paul Lawrie, Bradley Dredge and Brian Davis, to name just a few.

Two-time Portuguese Open champion, Philip Price, will be trying for a hat-trick and Jean van der Velde, winner of the Madeira Island Open last week, is also in the line-up. Former Ryder Cup star, Jarmo Sandelin, has recently enjoyed a return to form, coming seventh in last week’s Madeira event. No doubt he’ll be hoping to capitalise on that success this weekend in the Algarve.

Among those flying the flag for Portugal will be current national champion, José Filipe Lima, and former Portuguese number one, António Sobrinho, often dubbed the Portuguese Tiger Woods.

Following the cut on Friday (March 31), the field will be reduced to the top 65 players. Prize money for this year’s tournament totals 1.25 million euros.

Tickets, available from the kiosk at the hotel entrance, are priced as follows: Thursday, March 30 – 10 euros; Friday, March 31 – 10 euros; Saturday, April 1 – 12 euros; and Sunday, April 2 – 12 euros. A four-day pass costs 35 euros. For more information, call Le Meridien Penina Golf Resort on 282 420 200 or visit www.openportugal.com
