There appear only to be eight of them left in the country, but Portugal’s ministry of foreign affairs is committed to helping Portuguese nationals in Niger, following the recent coup d’état . A source for the embassy in Abuja tells Lusa that of the nine nationals who were confirmed by Portuguese authorities in the country, “with functions in European organisations and private companies”, one has already been withdrawn and “the operation regarding withdrawal of the others” continues. The coup, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has been condemned by the international community, notably the United States and the European Union.
