Former Oeiras mayor Isaltino Morais, who dodged jail for fraud for years before finally being condemned, is out on an electronic bracelet after serving half of his two-year sentence. Released by Lisbon’s appeal court on Tuesday, Morais will now serve the rest of his prison term ‘at home’, and is prohibited from leaving the country until 2015. Morais was originally jailed for seven years for fiscal fraud, abuse of power, money laundering and passive corruption, but this sentence was eventually reduced to two years – and now it effectively appears to have served for one.
