Portuguese Man o’ War jellyfish have been seen at beaches from Amoreira in the Algarve (Costa Vicentina) to d’El Rey in Óbidos, prompting IPMA – the national meteorological institute – to sound warnings to anyone hardy enough to think of swimming. Stings from these jellyfish can cause nasty burns. Anyone affected should apply a hot compress to the affected area for ‘around 20 minutes’ or use vinegar, explain reports. Other beaches reporting sightings are Largo dos Farilhões (Berlengas), Praia da Ursa, Praia da Magoito (both in Sintra), Guincho (Cascais) and Praia da Milícias (São Miguel, Azores).
