Portuguese make it on to the rich list

PORTUGUESE ENTREPRENEUR Américo Amorim is the richest person in Portugal and is in the top 150 richest people in the world, according to the Forbes rich list.

Mr Amorim came 132nd out of the 1,125 named rich people and has a fortune of more than four billion euros.

He is the largest private investor in energy company Galp Energia, where he holds a 33.34 per cent stake in the company.

For the first time, Portugal has four people in the Forbes list but the second richest person in Portugal, Belmiro de Azevedo, has an estimated fortune of 1.3 billion, which is nearly three billion less than Mr Amorim. He ranks 605th in the Forbes list and is the head of Grupo Sonae.

He is followed by the largest private investor of BCP bank, Joe Berardo, who is also an art collector. He occupies the 677th place in the Forbes list and in 843rd place is Horácio Roque, who is the president of Banif bank and Holding Rentipar.

Elsewhere in the Forbes list, Bill Gates, who occupied the number one spot for 13 consecutive years, is this year in third place.

The richest man in the world is Warrent Buffet, who is the CEO and largest individual shareholder of his investment company, Berkshire Hathaway.

He has a net worth of 62 billion US dollars and is followed by Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helú, who has a fortune of 60 billion US dollars and is the owner of Latin America’s largest mobile network operator, América Móvil, and telecommunications company, Telmex.
