MORE THAN 32 per cent of Portuguese like to socialise in their kitchen, according to a world survey by IKEA. Eating together with the family and hygiene in the kitchen are particularly important for the Portuguese, according to the study, which questioned 14,000 people in 28 countries.
The amount of time spent in the kitchen in Portugal was above the European average of 20.5 per cent – only Italians spend more time there. Ana Teresa Fernandes, from IKEA’s marketing department, said: “This is a Latin characteristic. A lot of Portuguese really do spend a lot of time socialising and eating in the kitchen, with 70 per cent using it to cook all their meals – higher than the European average of 58.8 per cent.
According to the study, Portugal, Malaysia and Russia have the cleanest kitchens in the world, with 67.7 per cent of the Portuguese saying they preferred the kitchen for family get-togethers.
