Portuguese lawyers have become the latest profession to unite to help Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s military onslaught.
Talking to Rádio Renascença today, Luís Menezes Leitão, president of the Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados), said a number of members of his organisation are ready to give free legal advice to any Ukrainian citizens who want to come to Portugal.
The Ordem will thus open a platform publicising the various lawyers’ contact details.
“Given this goodwill that many colleagues have expressed, and which we consider commendable, the Ordem has decided to establish a channel to collate all these offers, which we will then transmit to the Embassy of Ukraine and the National Association of Lawyers in Ukraine”, he said.
In a communiqué today, the Ordem has added its own sense of outrage to Russia’s devastating attack, describing it as a “war of shameful aggression unleashed on a free and sovereign country”.
The Bar Association’s willingness to step in and make a difference follows similar generosity shown by estate agents (click here) who have created a database with the view of supplying free, or ‘as cheap as possible’ accommodation to incoming refugees.
