Two Portuguese F-16 fighter jets identified and escorted a Russian military aircraft IL-76 off the coast of Estonia in the Baltic Sea, as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, the Atlantic Alliance reports. The Russian plane was flying from mainland Russia to the Kaliningrad enclave over international waters. “As there was no flight plan, nor was the aircraft in contact with air traffic control or using its transponder, the NATO Northern Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany, ordered the F-16s to launch and confirm details of the unknown aircraft,” the Atlantic Alliance explains in a statement.
