Portuguese: Europe’s cultural pygmies

As culture buffs go, the Portuguese are among Europe’s least interested. They are less likely to take part in cultural activities than more or less every other nationality and they have the lowest interest in reading.

The stark news comes from a Eurobarometer study which interviewed 27,000 people throughout the EU. Only Greece showed a lower level of cultural interest, with just 5% of its citizens pursuing cultural activities on a regular basis.

In Portugal the figure was 6%, while elsewhere countries boasted levels of up to 43% (Sweden) and 36% (Denmark), with 33% being the European average.

Money, or lack of it, plays a huge part in these results, with the study showing 35% of Portuguese saying lack of money precluded them from pursuing cultural activities.
