Portuguese economy registers “strong growth in April” compared to 2020

Portugal’s economy has been pronounced as “showing strong growth” compared to the same time last year. As the country finally emerges from three months of confinement, the daily economic indicator calculated by the Bank of Portugal shows growth for the week ending April 25 at 20% above the comparative period last year. “The recovery is underway”, finance minister João Leão said in parliament today, citing data from statistics institute INE which shows unemployment reduced in March to a level of 6.5%, and employment increased. “Commercial sales, ie non-food products, have recovered to levels of practically last year”, he added.
