Portuguese “caught red-handed” at Salema cannabis plantation

A 38-year-old Portuguese man was arrested on Monday (July 27) after being caught tending a cannabis plantation in Salema, Vila do Bispo.

The illegal crop was located near a house where the man is also believed to have run a drug laboratory.

Portimão’s GNR police confiscated 56 cannabis plants and over a kilo of dried cannabis leaves, as well as a variety of equipment from the lab including fertilizers, LED lights and a ventilation system.

A GNR source said that “everything indicated” that the lab was used to “cultivate the drug all year round”.

It is yet another drug bust in a region which the GNR agrees has all the right conditions for cannabis cultivation.

As we went to press, the Portuguese man was due to be heard by Lagos’ Public Prosecutor’s Office.
