Luís Pedroso is living proof of the American Dream. Moving to the USA from the Azores as a child, the 54-year-old Portuguese entrepreneur built up a reputable business career that has now earned him the very first ‘American Dream’ award – created by the International Institute of New England to “recognise individuals who embody the work ethic, ingenuity and generosity that are hallmarks of the immigrant experience”.
Currently president of his company Accutronics Inc., Pedroso is described as having had an important role in the creation of a Portuguese culture and research centre at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.
He previously founded Qualitronics, an electronic components company which he sold with a balance sheet of $25 million in yearly sales and 160 employees.
“As a responsible business owner, philanthropist, and a caring and committed member of the Portuguese community in Lowell, Luis’ business success has translated into opportunity for many Portuguese immigrants and their descendants,” said the New England institute. “Through his ideas and the belief that with hard work, dedication and commitment, anything is possible, he has helped create the American Dream for many immigrant families.”
Receiving the award last week, Pedroso said it was a “huge surprise” but nonetheless a “great honour”. He also gave his own definition of the American Dream.
“It is the conviction that, with hard work, dedication and determination, anyone can achieve their dream in this country, no matter where they come from. That’s the fundamental difference between America and the rest of the world.”
