Portuguese citizens purchased 16 million LESS pairs of shoes in 2020 than they did in the year before. The pandemic saw shoe sales plummet nationally by 24.6%, which has been described by Luís Onofre, president of the Portuguese association representing the sector, as “a bucket of cold water”. “However resilient this industry is, (survival) is very difficult”, he has told Dinheiro Vivo. Nonetheless, shoe fairs continue – and 34 Portuguese manufacturers recently exhibited at the latest, in Milan in Italy, suggesting there are hopes for improvement into the future.
