Portuguese boost

More than 13 million overnight stays were registered in the Algarve during 2010, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

This figure represents an increase of 2.6% in comparison to 2009 and has been hailed as a “positive” result by Nuno Aires, the president of the Algarve Tourism Board.

Domestic tourists were found to be instrumental in the increase, with 3.8 million tourists from within Portugal visiting the Algarve in 2010, an increase of 4.2% compared with 2009.

“The very positive response from the Portuguese people reinforces the importance of the work undertaken by the Algarve Tourism Board within Portugal,” said Nuno Aires.
