Portugal’s tax on used cars entering country “violates EU rules of free circulation of goods”

The European Court of Justice has ruled on a point that has become a bone of contention to many expats: Portugal’s tax on used cars being imported from member states violates the rules of free circulation of goods.

As such, the government has said today that it is analysing the court’s findings before it is prepared to take a position.

Noticiasaominuto has stressed, however, that there appears to be little chance of the tax being abolished altogether.

A source for the ministry of finance said “this ruling will only determine adjustments to a small part of used cars that are imported”.

The European Court of Justice’s findings were reported today (Thursday) and referred particularly to article 11 of the CIV (code on vehicle tax) in which judges found Portugal discriminates negatively against used vehicles imported from other EU countries.
