Portugal’s registry offices on strike as workers demand better conditions

With last week’s fuel crisis still on everyone’s mind, Portugal is now set to deal with another strike as registry offices in Portugal will be operating with a minimum number of staff until the end of the working week. Workers are calling for better working conditions, wage structure and career progression opportunities.

The strike is expected to slow down registry services to even more of a snail’s pace.

Union bosses believe a large number of workers will join the strike.

“Registry offices may be open, but services such as renovating a Cartão de Cidadão (citizen’s card) or finalising a divorce may be seriously affected,” union boss Rui Cardoso told TSF radio.

The strike is scheduled to take place until Friday, April 26.
