To commemorate World Book and Copyright Day, Portugal’s president Marcelo has sent books to the libraries of two prisons – Bragança and Custóias, near Matosinhos. Says a note on the president’s official website, the gesture was “a symbolic form” of associating people detained in prison establishments to the celebration of World Book Day, and sending them a message of solidarity and reaffirmation that no-one is condemned forever”.
