Portugal’s milk producers stage poignant protest in Porto

Porto milk producers staged a poignant protest yesterday by placing 200 work boots on the ground in the city’s Avenida dos Aliados. Each boot represented a dairy that has closed in the last year. The objective was “to show the government and political parties the need for a new PAC (common agricultural policy) that will give farmers a chance of survival”, said Marisa Costa, vice-president of the association of milk producers of Portugal. Said Ms Costa there are only 4,000 farmers left in the milk sector, and those that have managed to survive are “tired, and disgusted” with the lack of available support.
