Portugal’s Michelin star chefs team-up against cancer

In a refreshing new initiative designed to improve the lives of cancer patients, a Portuguese NGO has launched an extremely special cookbook.

Marketed under the slogan “15 chefs…1 book…87 recipes”, the project has been supported by a welter of prestigious bodies and entities and involves three specific stages.

First is the launch of the cookbook which, it is hoped, will go on to fund the second and third goals of creating an online platform to share its content, along with training programmes and workshops.

Selling for just €20, the book promises to be a feast not just for the eyes, but for the soul.

As project organiser Bibi Sattar explained, many cancer patients lose their appetites after being diagnosed – not simply through the shock and despair of discovering that they are ill, but as a result of the after-effects of treatment, particularly chemotherapy.

Thus the idea to create recipes designed not only to encourage people to eat, but to give them the correct nutrition to face the battles they have in front of them.

Under the umbrella of social solidarity association aTTitude, Sattar told us that all the recipes were based on the nutritional needs of patients and backed by scientific input from a cancer specialist and nutritionist.

“We considered it essential to develop this book,” she explained.

And her past experience organising a series of fundraising gourmet dinners for a charity supported by former Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio meant that she knew exactly who to approach to come up with the winning recipes.

The accomplished chefs involved hail from Michelin star restaurants all over Portugal.
