Headlines preceding Thursday’s Council of Ministers – when new restrictions on people’s freedom and mobility are expected to be announced – are suggesting today that the 4th wave of coronavirus infections sweeping the country will ‘peak’ in around one month’s time with an average of up to 2,000 new infections per day. Hospital numbers are expected to increase (by roughly another 100 people in hospital than there are now, and another 50 or so in ICUs), according to experts on the Covid-19 Insight platform, run out of the New University of Lisbon. Meantime, president Marcelo has reiterated that numbers are still nowhere near high enough for him to consider declaring another State of Emergency.
