Portugal won two prizes at this year’s Globe Soccer Awards, with Benfica’s Caixa Futebol Campus named the world’s best football academy and Jorge Mendes considered the best football agent.
The award ceremony was held on Sunday (December 26) in Dubai.
Benfica’s president Luís Filipe Vieira said his club’s accolade is the result of the “strong investment” Benfica has made in the academy, which opened in Seixal in 2006.
“We have more and more footballers trained at our academy making our main squad, which hasn’t happened for decades,” he said, praising the work of all the coaches involved.
“We will continue to invest in innovation,” he added.
Jorge Mendes took to the stage to receive his sixth consecutive “Best Agent of the Year” award, attributing his success to “working hard and finding the right people to work with”.
Three months ago, Mendes was named “the second most powerful sports agent in the world” by Forbes magazine (click here).
