In Romania to visit Portuguese military stationed there (see top stories) President Marcelo said today that Portugal “will always stand by Romania” on the issue of Romania’s entry into the Schengen area – a declaration that Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis said was a “national objective of great importance”. Marcelo said “it is important for the European Union to review the position taken recently (not to accept Romania or Bulgaria into Schengen) as soon as possible (…) European solidarity cannot be a partial or unilateral solidarity, it has to be global, and global solidarity means, in issues as important as these, at a time as serious as this, avoiding additional problems to the problems we all already have in Europe and in the world”.
