A EUROPE-WIDE missing child line being tested in Portugal will be up and running in November.
Portugal is one of six European Union countries to adopt the 116000 number which will be attended 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The new Hotline will fall under the aegis of SOS Criança in Portugal which is taking on more staff to man lines.
The 116000 line will act as an extension of the current SOS Criança line (1410). On receiving a report of a missing child, a form will have to be filled out giving details including a physical description of the child, followed by the circumstances of the disappearance, information which is then passed on to the relevant authorities.
A team from the Instituto de Apoio à Criança, which runs SOS Criança, has various projects involving children and can help locate missing children. It also offers psychological help to the families of missing children and reports the case to the Minors Protection Commission.
