Portugal surpasses 1,000,000 Covid infections…17 months on

As of today, Portugal has amassed 1,003,335 infections of SARS-CoV-2 after 17 months living with the pandemic. Covid-19 has claimed the lives of 17,562 nationals (the vast majority of them elderly people with underlying conditions/ compromised immune systems): a fatality rate of 1.7%. Today’s bulletin shows the country is registering 45,367 active infections, with numbers being treated in hospital at 744, of which 157 are in intensive care. As Germany relaxes its rules for nationals visiting the country, Portugal’s Rt (trabsmission number) has dropped to 0.95, while the average for infections per 100,000 people is ‘down’ to 324.6. Meantime, the ‘Covid death count’ continues in spite of the fact that experts have said it is really time to start focusing on the bigger picture, which is that for the moment at least, Portugal’s 4th wave is abating and the vaccine programme is making leaps and strides.
