Just as we were all getting used to the fact that Portugal did not have enough doctors, and those that it had trained were all leaving for better prospects elsewhere, the Doctors Association is warning that we have too many young doctors coming through the system, and that they won’t all be able to find jobs, as there are just too many of them.
Talking to reporters this week, association president José Manuel Silva said as many as a third of the country’s new doctors will have to leave the country to find work.
Bizarrely, the news comes in a week when the new health minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes has announced that the government will be trying to fill doctor vacancies this year by encouraging retirees back to work, in return for good salaries with pension payments on top.
