Portugal reports 3,834 new COVID-19 infections, 87 deaths

Portugal reported 3,834 new COVID-19 infections and 87 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures released by health authority DGS on Sunday.

Portugal has seen 4,963 deaths and 322,474 infections due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, with 74,456 cases active on Sunday, 845 more than on Saturday .

The figures also revealed that there were 2,852 cases of people recovering in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 243,055.

Portugal’s president on Friday extended the state of emergency until 23 December in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. The state of emergency is expected to be extended until January 7. 

Cases of COVID-19 in Portugal are relatively low compared to other European countries but a recent soar in cases is putting the health system under considerable pressure.
