Portugal registers lowest birth rate in EU

Population || Portugal registered the lowest birth rate in the European Union in 2013, according to EU statistical office Eurostat – 7.9 children per 1,000 inhabitants were born last year in Portugal, below the national death rate of 10.2.
This means that in one year the country “lost” around 60,000 inhabitants. Portugal also registered a negative net migration rate of 36,200.
The tendency was contrary in the EU, however, where the population increased from 505.7 million on January 1, 2013 to 507.4 million on January 1, 2014.
During that time, 5.1 million babies were born in the EU, meaning 10 babies were born per 1,000 EU citizens.
Germany, Greece and Italy registered the lowest rates (8.5) besides Portugal, while the highest were registered in Ireland (15), France (12.3) and the UK (12.2).
