Portugal registers five-fold increase in tourists

Tourists make most of March

Tourist accommodation maintained acceleration in March, with 1.6 million guests and four million overnight stays recorded – corresponding to increases of 464.1% and 543.2%, respectively, according to data from statitics institute INE released today.

Growth recorded in March exceeded that observed in February, which also registered increases of 503.8% in terms of guests and 523.5% in overnight stays.

These numbers however are still lower than those recorded pre-pandemic in March 2019 (reductions of 15.3% in guests and 12.7% in overnight stays)

In the month under review, the domestic market contributed towards 1.3 million of the overnight stays, foreign markets to 2.7 million, says INE, which adds that March still saw 31.6% of tourist accommodation establishments closed, or not recording guest movement.
