A study by Crédit Suisse has shown that Portugal has 1,339 new millionaires this year in an overall panorama of 54,233. Three of these well-heeled nationals have “more than a billion” dollars to their name, and forecasts are that over the next five years, the number of millionaires will keep on growing. The study reckons Portugal will boast 76,324 Champagne Charlies by 2021.
Not quite so positive however is the percentage of nationals still surviving “below the poverty line”.
21st century Portugal has 20% of its citizens in this category, says the study – while the millionaires only account for 0.6% of the population.
