Portugal pressured to pay millions back to Brussels

According to Público, the government has been trying to keep the lid on an EU investigation into ‘irregular payments’ to farmers during the Sócrates’ administration, when Jaime Silva was minister of Agriculture. But now the EC has reiterated demands that Portugal pay back €143 million. The money will need to come out of this year’s state budget. Portugal’s only hope for a reprieve lies with an appeal to the Tribunal of Justice.
