Gouveia e Melo in his role as coordinator of Portugal's vaccinations task force

Portugal officially becomes world’s most vaccinated country against Covid-19

Well on target to have 85% of citizens fully-vaccinated against Covid-19 by the end of the month, Portugal is already the most vaccinated country in the world.

Our World in Data has the percentages (here… nb. Gibraltar remains the world’s most-vaccinated territory with 115% of its population vaccinated).

Reacting to the news, vaccination task force coordinator vice admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo has said: “We have beaten this virus…”

Elaborating, he explained: “… at least the first battle has been won, and this a great relief for all of us… the process of vaccination has beaten the virus and now we have to start to learn and regain our freedom and our lives. This is what we have to do – of course by taking precautions. We have to be intelligent; we cannot let our guard down”.

Indeed, the target of 85% is now looking more like rounding out at 86%.

Meantime, the vice-admiral has continued to stress that in his opinion Portugal’s roll-out has achieved the level of vaccinations that ensure herd immunity.

Experts however do not share this view: it is largely accepted in scientific circles that herd immunity will be well nigh impossible (click here).
