Portugal needs €38 billion just to repair its old buildings

A new study has revealed that 1.5 million homes in Portugal need urgent attention while it will take €38 billion just to repair all the buildings in states of degradation.
The study by the association of civil construction and public work industries (AICCOPN) is due to be presented on Friday (July 4), and is designed to map out the “real necessities” for urban rehabilitation in Portugal.
All the country’s parishes were surveyed for the initiative, and at least €24 billion will be needed to cover buildings that require “significant works”.
AICCOPN president Manuel Reis Campos said: “This study demonstrates that there are some very great disparities in our country. There are areas where you find too many houses, and areas where there are too few. And there are a lot of people living in overcrowded buildings, very run-down, with serious shortcomings”.
Investigators have come up with a detailed list, parish by parish, with corresponding figures on how much is needed to renovate/repair.
According to Expresso which carried the story, mainland Portugal is where money is needed most (€36.5 billion), while the rest of the expenses would be divided between Madeira and the Azores.
