The Portimão Portugal Match Cup got under way this week based at the city’s marina.
The prestigious series of sailing regattas, scheduled to end on Sunday, features Barreiro Olympian Álvaro Marinho leading the Portuguese challenge against an international elite.
This competition is part of the World Match Racing Tour, bringing to the Algarve the best sailors in the world. Twelve crews are competing this time round‚ including one from Portugal.
It is the eighth consecutive year that this has been held in Portugal and the second time in Portimão.
The competition will be based on the ‘match race’ style which is used in the America’s Cup, awarding the best teamwork and ability of the winning teams in each event.
Justino de Sá Machado, president of the Sun Sailing Team, which organises the event in Portugal, told the Algarve Resident: “When, in 2004, we decided to put Portugal in the sailing world competition circuit, we were convinced that this initiative would contribute to the enrichment of Portugal’s economy and tourism sectors.
“Portimão is one of the favourite holiday destinations in the Algarve and at this time of the year lots of tourists are already in the city and this event will also attract more tourists to come and visit the city.”
