Voting is still ongoing, but Portugal is definitely on target for being declared “Best Country in Europe” by top travel website USA Today.
Other favourites are Italy and Austria – and there are a total of 19 nominations in total, including Croatia, the Czech Republic and Turkey.
For now though, those in the know are betting on Portugal.
“The very underestimated Portugal has all the attractions of a beautiful European country,” says the website. “Cobbled villages in the shade of medieval castles, sun-kissed beaches, delicious traditional gastronomy and a rich history.”
The site also extols on the turquoise-blue coastal waters, Port wine and the “melancholic lament” of Fado in Lisbon’s winding streets.

Voting closes on May 12 (Monday) at noon, and then we will all know if Portugal ‘makes it’.
