Portugal leads in hunting tax fraud

Portugal is at the forefront of European countries in fighting tax fraud, according to Secretary of State of Tax Affairs Paulo Núncio (pictured).

In a recent press conference in Brussels, after a meeting with the European Commissioner for Taxation in which he presented Portugal’s electronic invoicing system, Núncio announced that since January the government has received 2.5 billion invoices.

The Secretary of State added that the requirement to issue invoices for all transactions and the obligation that companies from all sectors face to report these invoices to the tax authorities led to the high number registered.

He said: “In terms of Europe, Portugal is a pioneering country in this matter and the programme that was created is completely innovative. I can reveal that the Commission showed great interest in knowing more about the programme.”
