Portugal in talks to bring another 600 refugees by December

State minister Eduardo Cabrita says Portugal hopes to bring in another 500-600 refugees “by the end of the year”. The first new arrivals are expected next month from Greece, he told Antena 1 radio, while 130 Eritreans will soon be on their way from Italy.

Despite reports in August that the country has already taken in over 700 refugees, Antena 1 put the figure at 514, distributed over 67 boroughs. In other words, the new plans will double Portugal’s intake by December.

Cabrita’s news did not touch on stories in the media that refugee families are not entirely happy with their reception in Portugal – often due to the limited resources available to them (click here).
