Portugal registered over five million Covid 19 cases

Portugal has registered over five million cases of SARS-CoV-2

Reporting the news as ‘Covid-19: Portugal reaches five million cases’ – when the truth is hundreds of thousands of these cases will have not developed into the serious illness that is Covid-19 – newspapers today are full of ‘the numbers’. The reality however is that practically half the country will now have ‘memory’ of the virus within their systems, which should help if they are reinfected (which many have been and continue to be due to the virus mutating). For now, the good news is that fewer people are becoming infected (as so many of them now have a degree of immunity), and fewer are becoming seriously ill and/ or dying. Rt too, on the mainland at least, is well below 1 – meaning transmission is falling markedly.
