Portugal is at last to get its own paedophile register, accessible to all parents of children under the age of 16.
It’s a ruling made in a bid to cut down on the number of high-profile repeat offences that have been playing out across the country.
Parents will be able to solicit information about paedophiles living in their area, as long as they then keep this information to themselves.
Further details on the new law will be announced shortly by the Ministry of Justice.
As the media carried this latest news, yet another situation of a child being abused hit the headlines.
This time it was in Leiria, and involved a seven-year old girl, on holiday in Portugal with her Portuguese parents.
According to PJ police, a 72 year old man has appeared in court and allowed home, on the understanding that he does not leave the country, contact the girl or her family, or have anything to do with other children. He has also been ordered to report twice-weekly to his local police station.
