Portugal exports 4000 cattle and sheep to Israel

Monday saw 2000 heads of cattle and 2000 sheep exported live from Sines in the Alentejo to Israel, the government has announced – stressing that the increase in exports within the live animal sector has now exceeded €157 million.

According to TVI24, new markets opening up for Portuguese producers include Jordan, Egypt and Algeria, though no mention is made of what will happen to the animals once they arrive at their final destination.

A clue however comes in the comment by a source representing the secretary of state for agriculture and food who told journalists that the Middle East was considered to be a “market of relevant dimension with cultural habits of consuming this type of meat”.
