As a destination for international events, Portugal is really getting noticed. New rankings published by the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) shows that Portugal jumped four places in the world’s top 20 last year, to take a comfortable 13th place. 2013 also saw the country host a total of 249 events – 36 more than the year before.
Not surprisingly, Lisbon is one of the European cities most sought-after, and in 2013 it ranked in 9th place, having bunny-hopped an incredible six positions. It is now more popular than Prague, Amsterdam, Brussels and Copenhagen, says the study.
Delighted with the news, Portugal’s tourism chief João Cotrim de Figueiredo said the accolade had much to do with the quality of touristic accommodation, infrastructures and services in the city and the existence of good airline connections that helped events organisations with all their logistics.
