Submit joint bid for European funding for additional firefighting air support
Portugal and Greece have signed a mutual assistance agreement on Civil Protection, which provides support in case of forest fires, floods and earthquakes.
The pact also involves holding joint disaster drills, as well as the exchange of experts and information in serious accidents and/ or catastrophe.
The commitment was signed on the sidelines of a European seminar on last year’s wildfires which ended today. The event was chaired by Portugal’s Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, and attended by European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic.
“We have just applied for funds from the European Union for additional aerial fire-fighting means (already for this year),” Mr Carneiro told reporters, saying Portugal remains available to receive, in Castelo Branco, one of four pre-positioning centres for air, land and human resources that the European Union seeks to make available in various parts of Europe.
