Portimonense: Two points lost

LIGA BWIN: PORTIMONENSE 1-1 ESTORIL

Portimonense ended their three-match losing run in the league but still failed to score from open play despite an initial aerial bombardment which produced seven corners and five shots on goal within the first 20 minutes.

Instead Estoril took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game when Erison Danilo smashed home a Joãozinho cross into the area. Proceedings on the pitch then became increasingly disjointed as referee Gustavo Correia flourished a total of 12 yellow and three red cards before the final whistle.

After the break Luquinha and Welinton Júnior had gone close before Estoril goalkeeper Daniel Figueira became the first to receive his marching orders for recklessly punching Filipe Relvas in the face. VAR confirmed the decision, but Bryan Rochez’s subsequent spot kick was well saved by replacement keeper Pedro Silva.

Welinton then headed against the crossbar before suffering a Mexer elbow jab in the area prompting another penalty decision, this time converted successfully by the victim himself to establish parity with 10 minutes remaining on the clock, which still left enough time for Mr Correia to dismiss Marco Pimenta from the Estoril bench and the at the time already substituted midfielder João Carvalho in quick succession before disallowing a 92nd-minute Pedrão ‘winner’ for a preceding foul – pandemonium!

Portimonense, now in joint eighth on 16 points alongside last Sunday afternoon’s opponents and Arouca
