Portimonense stalemate

LIGA NOS: VITÓRIA DE SETÚBAL 0-0 PORTIMONENSE

The statistics will show that Portimonense and Setúbal managed six and eight shots at goal, respectively, while enjoying an equal share of possession but, in reality, neither team deserved more than a point from last Sunday’s goalless encounter.

After Jackson Martinez had wasted a good opportunity on the quarter-hour mark, it was Aylton Boa Morte who caused the hosts the most problems during the remainder of the opening half.

The 26-year-old winger was denied by a good clearance from keeper Makaridze racing off his line before referee João Pinheiro adjudged Sílvio’s heavy last-ditch tackle in the area to have been perfectly legitimate.

The second half provided little more in the way of goalmouth action, a Lucas Fernandes free kick at one end and an Eber Bessa shot from distance at the other being the closest anyone got to scoring.

The draw leaves Portimonense in 13th place on five points, ahead on goal difference of this Sunday’s opponents at the Municipal Stadium, Braga, who have had an equally disappointing start to the season.

Before that match, current manager António Folha’s men will take on former mentor Vítor Oliveira’s new side Gil Vicente for the first League Cup third round group stage tie in Barcelos tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.
