Portimonense coach José Augusto had advised his players that AC Viseu would be very well organised at the back and looking to score from set pieces – unfortunately those warnings were to no avail as his team tasted defeat for the first time this season last Saturday afternoon.
The home side’s free-flowing attacking play which saw Fabricio and Ewerton go close was rudely interrupted just after the half-hour mark when a rare Viseu forward movement resulted in a penalty award following an Ivo Nicolau challenge in the area.
Bruno Carvalho duly converted to give the visitors the lead and Portimonense were left to chase the game thereafter.
A good move involving André Carvalhas shortly after the restart saw Pires level the score. However, any hope of Portimonense regaining the momentum was quickly snuffed out when Fonseca headed home only five minutes later to establish what was to remain the final 2-1 score line.
The defeat leaves the Algarveans, who travel to Aves this Saturday, in mid-table on three points from the two league matches disputed to date.
