Benfica, Porto and Sporting will very likely be returning to the Algarve for top tier football next year as Portimonense is just one point away from promotion to Liga NOS.
The Portimão-based club is on the verge of glory after beating second-placed Desportivo de Aves 2-1 in a hard-fought match on Wednesday (April 19) at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão.
Nigerian wonder kid Chidera scored for the home team just moments away from half-time, while Alexandre Guedes evened things up for Aves at the 65th minute.
The game-winning shot came from Brazilian midfielder Ewerton 10 minutes away from the final whistle.
The victory leaves Portimonense five points ahead of Aves and 15 points clear of Varzim, and needing just one draw in the last five games to clinch one of two promotion spots.
This would mean the Algarve would have representation in Portugal’s Primeira Liga for the first time since Olhanense was relegated in 2013/14.
Portimonense can celebrate this Sunday (April 23) with a draw or a win against Académico de Viseu in Viseu. The match begins at 11.15am with live coverage on SportTV.
