Portimonense – Cup fever

Portimonense became the only Algarve club to progress to the second round of the CTT League Cup after comprehensively beating Aves 3-0 last Sunday afternoon.

Manager José Augusto’s men dominated a fast and furious opening 45 minutes with the outstanding André Carvalhas and Mamadu finding the back of the opposition net early on before Fabrício established the final score line just before the interval.

The visitors returned much improved for the second half but were denied a consolation goal by a combination of the off-side flag and some important saves from first choice keeper Ricardo Ferreira.

While neighbours Farense were beaten on penalties by Oliveirense, Portimonense next travel to Olhanense conquerors Penafiel for the next phase which will include all but last season’s top four first division finishers who will join the fray during the subsequent third group stage.

Earlier last week, Portimonense, who have loaned both Mauricio and Gleison to Porto B while adding Brazilian U-17 and U-20 international central defender Lucas Possignolo to their squad, successfully completed their pre-season preparation with an easy 3-1 win over Spanish neighbours Recreativo Huelva.
