Portimonense – Closing the gap

Portimonense moved to within six points of one of the two coveted promotion places following last Sunday afternoon’s 2-1 away win over bottom club Trofense.
The hosts failed to cope with the Algarveans’ early onslaught and were only saved by the woodwork in the 6th minute before Fidelis did hit the target moments later with a great strike following a cross from Rafinha.
The visitors continued to exert pressure and were finally rewarded on the stroke of half time when Kanazaki was quickest to the ball after opposition keeper Rui Santos had palmed away an Ewerton effort, doubling the score.
Trofense did pull one back from a direct free kick half-way through an otherwise uneventful second playing period, but manager Vitor Maçãs’ well-organised defence never looked likely to let their advantage slip.
Portimonense’s charge up the league table was greatly aided by the top five team’s failure to register a single victory between them, raising hopes that further improvement is possible when current leaders Oliveirense provide the opposition in the municipal stadium on Sunday morning.
The club from Aveiro were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at home by lowly Oriental last time out and should not be an insurmountable obstacle – kick-off 11.15am, also live on Sport TV1.
