LIGA PORTUGAL BWIN: PORTIMONENSE 0-2 FC PORTO
Champions Porto maintained a by-now long-standing tradition by taking all three points in the Algarve for the eighth season in succession.
A mostly lacklustre match saw Portimonense fall behind in the 22nd minute following a neat interchange between Evanilson and Otávio, the latter slotting home without much difficulty.
Keeper Nakamura prevented worse before the break with two important saves from Uribe and Taremi, but his efforts proved in vain as Pepe’s clever lob, shortly after the restart, doubled the score.
Yago Cariello came closest to pulling one back but incredibly only managed to deflect the ball against the crossbar from a position almost on the goal line.
There was still time for VAR to reverse a penalty decision in Porto’s favour and for Nakamura to shine once more in keeping out a speculative long range Galeno effort, but by that time the game was already as good as over.
This weekend Portimonense travel to the Braga district to take on Vilaverdense, top of the regionalised third division Serie A, in the Portuguese FA Cup third round.
